This week the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club Fleet hosts a regatta of ice boats by Barrytown, NY. Last Saturday there were about 40 boats criss-crossing the ice at dizzying speeds. Pictured here is the Jack Frost, built in 1892. What is remarkable is that a very heavy boat like this can accelerate to a high speed in seconds. Because conditions are impossible to predict the club can only give a three day notice as to when the annual event will occur and the members will drop their plows and journey over 200 miles to be a part of it. Needless to say conditions have been ideal.
