While Francine Hunter McGivern’s rambling, rambunctious current offering at CR10, FOODshed – a collection of off-the-wall food-related conceptual art in her disused agricultural-industrial complex of an exhibition space – isn’t exactly easy to get your head around, it is certainly an ingenious and provocative attempt to relate the physical and creative resources of the region meaningfully. Curator Amy Lipton, former director of the Fields at Omi, and a champion of art in the service of environmental awareness, invited a score or so New York and Upstate artists to crystallize their vision for locally-based sustainable food production, and the results are, to the pleasure of this viewer, more curious than didactic. The multimedia installation, in CR10’s cavernous, elevated space, ranges from split-screen projections, through a kombacha production station, bottles of crimson, honey-infused vinegar juxtaposed with Egyptian poetry, to blocks of salt sensuously sculpted by sheep. Make of it all what you will: such thought for food is food for thought.
