Hello H(elsinki) H(udson) F(riend)s:

For quite a few years, “Sauerkraut” Seth Travins has been hosting his own, old-fashioned, old-style roots-music revues at Club Helsinki Hudson. Travins is a one-man marvel of old-time country, Western swing, honky-tonk, and early rock ‘n’ roll styles, and he’s got a direct line into likeminded artists and bands all over the U.S. and the globe who mine these styles with authenticity, virtuosity, and creativity, just like he does. I always say that if I ever produce a roots-music recording, Seth Travins will be my first phone call.

Seth’s Sauerkraut Revue returns to Club Helsinki Hudson on Friday, February 16, at 8pm . Featured artists include the Roughouts ; Chris Neumann ; Reid Waring ; Molly Comstock & Lucy Marston with Maura Marcks ; and Chops and Sauerkraut featuring Jim “Kroutons” Krewson.

Chops, Sauerkraut, and Kroutons play hard-edged rockabilly, honky-tonk, and garage-rock Chops and Sauerkraut take influence from Carl Perkins, the Standells, ? and the Mysterians, Frankie Yankovic, Elvis Presley, Bob Wills, and the Cramps.

Michael “Chops” Laconte is one of the best rockabilly bass players around; he has gigged as bassist with Brian Setzer (Stray Cats) and tours regularly with the Lustre Kings and the legendary Wanda Jackson. He was a founding member of the 1990s New York band Slick Pelt.

” Sauerkraut” Seth Travins is known for his work with the Wiyos, the Blue Ribbon Boys, the Big Iron Skillet Band, and with Contradance band the Russet Trio. Seth makes sauerkraut, kimchee, and fermented vegetables when he’s not playing music.

Jim Krewson sings and plays drums, most notably with bluegrass/country rock outfit Jim and Jennie and the Pinetops.

The Roughouts describe their sound as “Northeast Americana.” They play a mix of originals and covers harking back to early Willie Nelson, the Maddox Brothers, Lucinda Williams, and Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Sometimes with twin fiddles, vocal harmonies and a shuffle that makes the two steppers want to hit the dance floor. The Roughouts are Otis Lougheed (vocals, fiddle, resonator guitar); Lukas Schwartz (fiddle, vocals, Telecaster); Sarah Gottlieb (vocals, acoustic guitar); Will “Bing” Conklin (trumpet, vocals); Slink Moss (percussion, vocals); and Sauerkraut Seth (upright bass, vocals).
