CANAAN — Firefighters continue to search for the cause of a fire that destroyed much of the facade of the Canaan Congregational Church building.
The fire broke out about 5:30 a.m. Monday at the church at the intersection of state Route 295 and county Route 5.
“My first firefighter on scene reported that the two side windows were glowing red and a minute later when I got there smoke was pouring out the doors,” Canaan Fire Chief Bill Wallace said. “The fire was probably smoldering for a while inside the building before we got there.”
Firefighters left the scene by 3 p.m. that day, Wallace said. No one was injured or inside the church at the time the fire broke out, he said.
