This weekend and next: “How To Pray”
How To Pray is a story of a couple who can’t conceive a child. After sincere coaxing, the sister in law offers to carry the child for them. But the couple soon divorces. There lies the dilemma.
The author, Michele Carter, captures the needed integrity in this realistic play of love and actual responsibility. Don’t be a fake liberal she says. I agree. plenty ‘o paradoxes in How To Pray, but, that’s real life. It’s also why this play has such value. I admit I don’t know how to pray. No faith, no hope, just prepare as best as possible to greet the day. A clear unfiltered mind is all I seek.
The acting… oh my… the acting. Yes!
Susan Slotoroff IS adorable and gorgeous. WAY talented. Vulnerable and rock solid… Oh boy! All of the cast is excellent.
The set is similarly strong. The set, a spinning projector bed, demonstrates why an MIT graduate is useful in a theater (John Sowle). I want a spinning projector bed. All in all, How To Pray is executed so well it could be called “How To (perform a) Play”.
This production is another example of BST’s ability to show why live theater is needed, that it’s far different from the many screens. Live theater like this provides an example of the courage, courage we need in our daily lives.
Go see this play, then use the example in our own community and within our own families. It’s needed, now as much as ever.
