Freehold Art Exchange is excited to present “ZINE 2020: MYOZ M(ake) Y(our) O(wn) Z(ine),” a series of two zine-making workshops for teens and adults to be held over two weekends. The Adult Session will take place on September 26 and September 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the Teen Session will take place on October 3 and October 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., both sessions at Freehold Art Exchange, 421 Plattekill Rd, Freehold, NY 12431.

Each student of the ZINE 2020 Workshop will learn how to tell a story through a simple, unique paper zine. Taught by photographer and zine-maker Juan Madrid, this free outdoor class will take place on a picturesque field framed by the Catskill Mountains at Freehold Art Exchange (FAEx) in the hamlet of Freehold, near Cairo, NY. Participants will learn zine history and techniques, including collage and binding. Each student will make their own unique paper zine, and the class will collaborate to make one zine together (as time allows).

“Zines are hands down one of the best ways for people to share their ideas and feelings through making something,” Madrid said. “Zines are a fun and easy way to introduce people, young and old, to the power that they have inside themselves.”

Madrid says that zine-making’s empowerment lies in its do-it-yourself (DIY) nature. “Zine-making empowers teenagers to see themselves as producers: they learn to take an idea from inception to draft to final to edition,” Madrid said. “From conceptualizing a message to preparing a hand layout, the process is a strong exercise in spatial awareness and executive functioning.”

Madrid also wants to share interdisciplinary methods of zine-making with students, including the inspiration that music can provide. “Zines have been used to promote bands, protests and movements. We will discuss with teens how musicians mash and blend songs and sounds, and how they can use zine-making to mash and blend words and images. We will encourage them to share their favorite songs for work sessions.”

Participants of the ZINE 2020 Workshop should expect to bring their own photos (printed or on their phones), and their own brown bag lunch. FAEx will provide magazines, markers, crayons, pens, pencils, paper, tape, glue, & scissors, as well as a printer.

COVID safety measures will be observed, including outdoor social distancing and a maximum of 12 people per session.

Any class updates and changes will be announced on FAEx’s website and Facebook page. For more information and directions, visit http://www.freeholdartexchange.org or email juanmadridphotography@gmail.com.

This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Greene County Council on the Arts.
