CATSKILL — Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley announced Friday the remaining housing units of the Greene County Jail will be temporarily closed because of structural concerns.

Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley and three Greene County legislators decided to close the remaining housing units in the jail after consulting with a structural engineering firm, according to a statement from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. The statement did not identify the three legislators.

The decision was made as a precautionary measure to staff and inmates, according to the sheriff’s office. Final structural engineering evaluations are expected to be completed with other recommendations to follow.

Inmates will be transferred to the Ulster County Jail and the Columbia County Jail, according to the sheriff’s office. Seeley put the number of inmates who are being boarded out at 50. Thirty will be sent to Columbia County and 20 will be transferred to Ulster County.
