Local food/farms

Heroic Food is a new non-profit project offering the first comprehensive, tuition-free residential farmer training program for veterans in the United States. The program, developed in partnership with the Farmer Veteran Coalition (www.farmvetco.org), is based on a newly-purchased 18-acre property on Fish & Game Road, where trainees will live free of charge during 1 to 2 years of training. Taking advantage of the Hudson Valley’s burgeoning independent farming community, Heroic Food will place veterans in paid training positions on local farms, while offering additional courses and workshops in farm skills, value-added food production, and farm-business planning. The program focuses on sustainable and regenerative growing techniques, with an emphasis on self-reliance and ecological stewardship. Heroic Food is being incubated under the fiscal sponsorship of the Hawthorne Valley Association (http://hawthornevalleyassociation.org).
