Hudson Area Library Programs

Hudson Area Library is hosting author Jacinta Bunnell and illustrator Crystal Vielula for a special virtual book release party and storytime celebrating their new picture book, A More Graceful Shaboom. This is a child-friendly event that is open to all ages, and will take place Sunday, October 18, at 7pm via Zoom video conferencing service. For more information and to register, visit the library website, call 518-828-1792 x101 or email programs@hudsonarealibrary.org. This program is offered in collaboration with OutHudson.

In A More Graceful Shaboom, a gender nonbinary protagonist named Harmon Jitney finds their joy and purpose in a magical satchel which leads to an extraordinary, previously undiscovered universe. As described by Brian Selznick, award-winning author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, “A More Graceful Shaboom is what would happen if Remy Charlip and Freddy Mercury had a baby. It’s what would happen if you could live in Narnia and Woodstock at the same time. It’s what would happen if the idea of inclusiveness was taken to the outer edges of the universe. There’s room enough for everyone, plus there’s a disco ball. That’s enough for me.”

Jacinta Bunnell is the author of five coloring books with PM Press/Reach and Teach, including Sometimes the Spoon Runs Away with Another Spoon, Girls Are Not Chicks, and The Big Gay Alphabet Coloring Book. She is a visual artist, writer, and educator living in the Hudson Valley, NY. For close to two decades, Jacinta has been making media for young readers that challenges gender stereotypes. This is her first picture book. For more on Jacinta’s previous works, visit queerbookcommittee.com.

Crystal Vielula is a San Francisco–based artist, muralist, and art educator. She works with a variety of different media, including collage, painting, pen and ink, acrylic, and textiles. She is currently diving into the world of experimental film and performance. For more on Crystal’s previous works, visit crystalvielula.com.
