The Germantown Waterfront Advisory Committee has sent its first comment letter to the New York State Department of State regarding Amtrak’s proposed gates and fences to restrict access to miles of Hudson River shore, a proposal which we in the committee, along with Scenic Hudson, Riverkeeper, and local sportsmen, first responders, historians, nature lovers and others, believe would have an adverse impact on Germantown and other river communities.
The letter, addressed to Matthew P. Margaglio, a coastal resource specialist in the New York State Department of State’s consistency review unit, reads, in part:
“The Town of Germantown Waterfront Advisory Committee (WAC) was appointed by the Germantown Town Board in 2016 to use grant money from the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS) to complete a Local Waterfront Revitalization Study (LWRS), which is, coincidentally, being finalized this month.
“We’ve spent a year and a half conducting public outreach and researching the unique qualities of our community. The committee finds that the Federal Consistency Assessment Form (FCAF) prepared by Amtrak and released for public comment on March 14, 2018 by the NYSDOS under public notice number F-2018-0060 is unacceptably vague, was created without local consultation, and is inconsistent with our LWRS in many ways.
“In fact, we’ve learned so much through our NYS funded study that we couldn’t possibly explain our concerns in just one letter. Over the course of the next month, we plan to issue a series of white papers that elaborate our concerns in more detail.”
