Check out nature at your local library! Thanks to a grant from the Land Trust Alliance’s New York Conservation Partnership Program, patrons of many local libraries will be able to take nature-based adventures with Explorer Backpacks free of charge. Starting this fall, families will also able to test-drive the Explorer Backpacks at public programs offered by the Columbia Land Conservancy in partnership with various libraries.

The 5 backpack themes include Insects, Streams and Ponds, Birding, Night Sky, and Take a Hike. The 11 participating libraries around the county include the Chatham Public Library, Claverack Library, Germantown Library, Hudson Area Library, Kinderhook Memorial Library, Livingston Free Library, New Lebanon Library, North Chatham Free Library, Philmont Library, Roeliff Jansen Community Library and the Valatie Free Library.

To celebrate the launch of the program and invite families to check out the backpacks, CLC is hosting a Library Explorer Backpack Extravaganza on September 25, National Public Lands Day. This extravaganza will take place at High Falls Conservation Area in Philmont from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and all libraries will be invited to attend! Each backpack theme will be available for attendees to view from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and guided walks will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. to test out the backpack materials on the trails! Register to attend at clctrust.org/events.

This project is supported with funding from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP) and New York’s Environmental Protection Fund. The NYSCPP is administered by the Land Trust Alliance, in coordination with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
