CHATHAM — This has been a good year so far for calves at the Doyle farm. Twenty were born in January; most were heifers.

“Those are the ones we keep,” Joe Doyle said. The males go to Empire Livestock.

The amount of time in labor varies, depending on the cow. “The other night we had one born in five minutes,” he said. Other times the head might be down, and the cow needs help, and sometimes a vet is called in.

For years, Joe and Jack Doyle ran the Doyle Brothers Farm. After Jack’s death a few years ago, the farm became The Doyle Mountain Farm. It’s worked by Joe, his nephew Dave Jones, and Jason Vogel, who’s been working there since he was a boy.
