OBJECT SPOTLIGHT: This rare c.1890s plaster bas-relief bust of Robert Fulton, from the permanent collection of CCHS–Gift of Dr Roderic & DeGuerre Blackburn in 1976–on loan to the NYS Museum, is the newest addition to the ‘People of New York’ exhibition at the New York State Capitol.

The rare plaster portrait was used as a template by stone carvers working on the construction of the Capitol.

Plaster models like this were made by immigrants including Otto Baumgartel of Saxony, and were carved into the sandstone of the #MillionDollarStaircase by Louis J. Hinton of London and Killian Darbol.
