Curious for the best places to see fall foliage this week, the peak of a splendid, flamboyant season? Two of the top 12 spots for Dutchess County are in Red Hook.

River Road between Rhinebeck and the Bard College Campus has made Dutchess Tourism’s list, as has Tivoli Bays Wildlife Management Area and Research Reserve. The Town of Red Hook, at 40 square miles, comprises 4.8 percent of Dutchess County’s 825 square miles, yet takes up nearly 17 percent of the fall foliage recommendations.

River Road, also known as County Route 103, is a 12-mile stretch that runs north-south roughly parallel to Route 9G and is the westernmost route closest to the Hudson River. The Red Hook portion north of Route 199 now has speed bumps and a traffic-calming 30-mile-per-hour speed limit as part of the new Empire State Trail Project. This 750-mile initiative goes through Red Hook and also includes the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Tivoli Bays Trail, Montgomery Street, Broadway and Woods Road in Tivoli.

For a Tivoli Bays trail map, visit: https://www.dutchessny.gov/Departments/Parks/docs/tmstivolibays.pdf

Dutchess County’s list of top foliage sites also includes:
–Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park
–Staatsburgh State Historic Site in Hyde Park
–The Taconic State Parkway
–Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park in Beacon
–Millbrook Vineyards and Winery
–Ferncliff Forest in Rhinebeck
–DeLaVergne Hill in Amenia
–Silver Mountain Road in North East
–The Appalachain Trail Boardwalk in Pawling
–The Walkway over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie

Dutchess Tourism, Inc. is the officially designated destination marketing organization for Dutchess County.

The Old Chatham Country Store Café Gallery

Berkshire Visions Two Artists~Two Mediums

From June 3 to July 27 the Old Chatham Country Store & Cafe will display the work of Berkshire County residents Marguerite Bride and Karen S. Jacobs in an exhibition entitled “BERKSHIRE VISIONS ~ Two Artists-Two Mediums”. Please join the artists, curator, and owner for the Opening Reception, open to the public, on June 5th between 3 and 5 p.m.

From April–December each year The Old Chatham Country Store & Cafe displays a wide variety of art, by accomplished regional artists. The “gallery” is curated by Judy Staber, a local resident with a wonderful eye for art. On display will be representational watercolors by Marguerite Bride and abstract oil paintings by Karen S. Jacobs. Viewers will see that although their styles and mediums are different there is a delightful synergy in the work being exhibited and that the work is clearly shaped by living and playing in the Berkshires.

Marguerite Bride, an accomplished painter of local and regional scenes, is a four-time exhibitor at The Old Chatham Country Store & Cafe. Her work clearly displays the beauty of the Berkshires and includes paintings of recognizable Berkshire and New England scenes including Hancock Shaker Village. Bride’s work has been on magazine, catalog, and CD covers. One of her paintings will be displayed on the rounding board when the Berkshire Carousel, located in Pittsfield, opens in July. Bride is a Pittsfield resident and works out of her home studio. To see more of her work, visit her website margebride-paintings.com.

Karen S. Jacobs is a first time exhibitor at The Old Chatham Country Store & Cafe. Karen is an accomplished painter of abstract landscapes whose work has taken on an new flair since moving to the Berkshires a few years ago. Instead of skies over water or land, she now incorporates skies over treetops, sunsets over rolling hills, as well as ponds and natural flora into her work. Karen has exhibited work in numerous places in the Berkshires including galleries and other locations in Becket, Great Barrington, and Pittsfield, MA. Prior to moving to Pittsfield, she lived in the Boston area and exhibited in numerous galleries in Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. To see more of her work, visit her website karensjacobs.com.

The Old Chatham Country Store & Cafe, owned and operated by Brian Albert, is located at 639 Albany Turnpike, Old Chatham, NY. It is an institution in the town and a delightful gathering place. Store hours and directions are listed on their website http://www.oldchathamcountrystore.com. For other information please visit the artists’ websites as noted above.

Concerts in the Village continues its sixth season with major works of Mendelssohn, Brahms and Wagner. Led by David Smith, Artistic Director and Conductor, this program will be CITV’s 18th concert. Over 70 musicians will be performing, including the Broad Street Chorale, the Broad Street Orchestra, soprano Amanda Boyd, tenor Jon Morrell, and mezzo-soprano Vicki Smith. Former Metropolitan Opera singer Marjorie Elinor Dix will be CITV’s guest artist.

The concert includes Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, the richly romantic Alto Rhapsody and Schicksalslied of Johannes Brahms, and Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental settings of Psalms 95 and 42. Says David Smith, who will be conducting this concert, “These are all emotionally charged works, almost operatic in their force.”

CITV’s guest soloist for the Alto Rhapsody will be Marjorie Elinor Dix. A local resident, Ms. Dix has performed at the Metropolitan Opera and other opera houses throughout the United States and abroad. She has also appeared with major orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Houston Symphony, the American Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Chamber Ensemble with James Levine.
