Hudson Area Library Programs

Spring is here and so is an exciting lineup of book selections from the library’s Non-Fiction Book Group.

The Non-Fiction book meets on Mondays, 6-7:30pm.

Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming by Paul Hawken will be discussed on April 29.
The Library Book by Susan Orlean is on May 13.
No Ashes in the Fire: Coming of Age Black & Free in America by Darnell Moore is on June 24.

This monthly group is open to the public and focuses on history and social and political life in North America and is facilitated by library Board President Mark Orton. To register for the book group email morton@hudsonarealibrary.org.

About Drawdown, in Yale Environment 360 Hawken states: “We’ve never mapped, measured, and modeled the top solutions to global warming, after 40 years of this being in the public sphere. With this plan we have in hand now, in a practical way, the solutions that are needed in order to reverse global warming.” Ron Charles of the Washington Post writes in his review of Susan Orlean’s The Library Book: “ Orlean, a longtime New Yorker writer, has been captivating us with human stories for decades, and her latest book is a wide-ranging, deeply personal, and terrifically engaging investigation of humanity’s bulwark against oblivion: the library.” Finally, from the New York Times review: “In “No Ashes in the Fire,” Darnell Moore writes a deeply personal memoir of growing up in the cross hairs of racism and homophobia in Camden, N.J., in the 1980s and ’90s.”

These books are all available for borrowing through the Mid-Hudson Library System.

Martin Van Buren National Historic Site and the Rhode Island School of Design invite you to an opening celebration of the Lindenwald Mulberry Exhibit sponsored by the Friends of Lindenwald on June 27, 2015 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. The reception will be held at Lindenwald, Route 9H in Kinderhook.
The Witness Tree Project is an initiative of the National Park Service and the Rhode Island School of Design. Students in a joint history seminar and furniture studio study the history a tree has “witnessed” in order to create meaningful objects from the tree’s wood. This year the project used wood from Van Buren’s mulberry tree, which stood for 150 years before falling in the winter of 2011. The work will be displayed within Lindenwald – itself the witness to so much history – deepening the project’s articulation between history and design.

Join us on Saturday August 22nd at 2:00pm at Omi International Art Center in Ghent, NY, for the exhibitions concluding lecture by Dale Broholm, Senior Design Critic from RISD.

Special thanks to Omi for hosting the exhibit lecture in August and to the Columbia County Council on the Arts for publicizing the exhibit. We’re grateful to the Friends of Lindenwald, Tierra Farm, and Harvest Spirits for their support for the opening reception.
