The Martin Van Buren homestead, Lindenwald, a National Park Service Historic Site, and the Columbia County Historical Society are pleased to announce a special all-expenses paid ‘Day of History’ partnership during Spring and Fall 2019 for all the students of Columbia County to the CCHS Rural Properties: 1737 Luykas Van Alen House & c.1850 Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse; and to the residence of the 8th U.S. President, Lindenwald, the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.

An all-expense paid field trip, which includes round-trip bus service, is being offered to all fourth grade classes in the Chatham, Germantown, Hudson, Kinderhook, New Lebanon, and Taconic Hills districts, thanks to grants and generous private donations to both organizations designated for this purpose.

On-site tours rich in historical perspectives, artifacts and stories are offered by experienced docents, along with pre-tour background and planning materials to support
teachers’ current learning standards.

“I’m so pleased that the National Park Service and the CCHS are able to continue this partnership. Collaborating in this way give students in Columbia County a broad and meaningful understanding of their local history,” said Megan O’Malley, Superintendent of
Martin Van Buren National Historic Site.

History saved and preserved is the foundation for future generations, as it nurtures personal identity in an intercultural world and teaches critical 21st century skills, personal values and independent thinking. “Students learn history and culture in a visceral way when they visit these sites, with a far deeper understanding of what came before, than lessons learned on digital screens and 2-D textbooks,” said Lori Yarotsky, Executive Director of Columbia County Historical Society, “we are so pleased to be able to offer this program at no cost to the students nor the schools”.
