CHATHAM – To further agriculture in the county, the Columbia County Agricultural Society will be offering two $1,000 scholarships to beginning college students who are pursuing agriculture as a course of study. Applications are due August 1st.

Applicants must be Columbia County residents completing their senior year at any high school in 2019. They must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited two or four-year college beginning in the fall of 2019 and pursuing a field of study related to agriculture. They must also play an active role in this year’s Columbia County Fair in Chatham – whether as an exhibitor, presenter, volunteer or in some other capacity.

“We want the students to really be active at the Fair,” said Angelo Nero, Fair Secretary. “There is so much to learn about this county’s agriculture and the Fair has a good cross-section of what’s available. Plus, anyone can take the opportunity to meet some experts in a variety of fields. The judges, for example. They have incredible knowledge that can help a young person just starting out.”

Applications are rated as follows. Forty percent of the score is based on their Fair participation. Academic achievement counts for 20%, community service – 10% and the content of a 500-word essay counts for the last 30%. The topic of the essay is “How Past Participation in the Columbia County Fair Will Help Achieve Future Goals.” Transcripts and references are required as well.

Applicants will be notified of the results on August 20th and will be invited to participate in a public announcement on Monday, September 2nd, at the Fair. Recipients are not required to be in attendance. Prize money is distributed after completion of the winner’s first semester. “We really believe in young people as the future of agriculture in this county,” Nero added. “By providing these scholarships, we hope we’re offering concrete support for the next generation.”
